Shawn was born January 19, 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa. Her parents enrolled Shawn in a gymnastics class, when she was only three years old. On 2008 Summer Olympics, Johnson was a part of a team, that won silver medal for USA. She had knee surgery on 2010. She is currently retired.
